A widely recognized "win-win" situation can be seen in the development of the platform facilitating the adoption of mobile payment transactions in Hungary. Not only has it simplified interactions between businesses and consumers, but over the past decade, it has significantly impacted various dimensions of sustainability while also enhancing the competitiveness of participating economic players. Launched in 2014, this national platform initially provided electronic access to parking and road usage rights. Today, it has grown into an ecosystem that sustainably makes the services of 144 sales partners available through 56 resellers. Through continuous joint optimization and development, the system serves millions of customers.

Sustainable Digitalization: The Key to Green Growth

The platform's uninterrupted growth is evident in its rapid expansion—growing at an average annual rate of 35%, its transaction volume has increased nearly twentyfold (from HUF 4.3 billion to HUF 80 billion), while the number of purchase transactions has risen ninefold (from 8.5 million to 73 million) compared to its inception. Following the pandemic, the system experienced a surge, not only returning to its previous steady growth trajectory but skyrocketing in terms of user numbers, transaction volume, and total revenue. Additionally, the range of services expanded, with the introduction of the Mobiljegy for Public Transport service in 2019. Today, this service accounts for approximately one-third of the total platform’s transaction volume and purchase count. Thanks to its rapid nationwide rollout within just a few weeks, it played an undeniable role during the pandemic in ensuring seamless, cashless ticket and pass purchases and validations in public transportation.

A Successful Ecosystem Model: A Decade of Proof

For participating service providers and resellers, this digital infrastructure not only promotes more sustainable operations—such as by replacing paper-based administration—but also enables significant cost savings, increased efficiency, and measurable competitive market advantages. Automated processes and data-driven decision-making reduce administrative burdens, allowing for faster customer service, more efficient operations, lower operating costs, and higher revenue levels—all while improving the customer experience. The system’s continuously available statistical data is not only useful for oversight but also serves as a valuable support tool for operations, cost calculations, and revenue forecasting. As part of the platform, companies can strengthen their market position, as it simplifies market entry and enables immediate access to a large customer base. For end users, the fast, paperless, digital solution is becoming increasingly attractive.

Engagement and Sustainability: Expanding Reach Potential

The digital platform fosters financial and technological education while promoting inclusivity by making modern solutions accessible to a broader audience with low entry barriers. With a reach of 7 million customers, more people can benefit from these advantages, while service providers gain access to a vast market potential. A key indicator of environmental sustainability is that, over ten years, the platform has processed 404 million purchase transactions, reducing cash and paper usage, resulting in a total savings of 23,000 tons of CO2 equivalent compared to traditional sales methods.

The collective achievements of ecosystem partners highlight the efficiency and long-term potential of digital solutions. Moving forward, further innovations, developments, services, and features will continue to drive this process, strengthening sustainable economic growth and societal well-being.
